Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), as it is known for the past 72 years, the leading railway locomotive manufacturer of the world, has been the flagship production unit of Indian Railways. CLW has remained pioneer in turning out electric locomotives to international standards, providing safe and comfortable journey for the railway passengers. CLW, thus plays a key role in making Indian Railway’s self reliance in the field of electric locomotive production, becoming a prime mover to the Indian economy.
It has manufactured more than 11000 locomotives of various class since its inception which comprises; 2351 nos. of steam locomotives (1950-1968), 842 diesel locomotives (1968-1993) and 8089 electric locomotives of different types from 1961. About 90% of all electric locomotive ever used by IR have come from assembly lines of CLW.
Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) achieved a remarkable accomplishment by producing record 486 Locomotives in Financial Year 2021-22 against the Railway Board’s production target of 485 locos. This feat has been achieved only 283 working days. It is the best ever loco production performance by CLW in any Financial Year.
CLW was adjudged best Production Unit of IR along with ICF for the year 2021-22 and was given the Best Production Unit Shield on 28th May 2022 by Hon’ble MR Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw during annual award function at Bhubaneswar.

CLW scripted another page of history once again by engraving its name in the Limca Book of Records for its production of 431 electric locomotives in FY 2019-20. It is the second time since the loco production figure of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) has got recognition from the Limca Book of Records as a World Record after its first reorganization for producing 402 locomotives in the FY 2018-19 as World Record.
